asb law to advise on multi-million pound medical campus development for Kent

The Maidstone Medical Campus aims to be a world-class centre of excellence in patient care and medical related education and research.

asb law has been appointed legal adviser on the second phase of a multimillion pound regional development located on a seven-acre site adjacent to junction 7 of the M20.

Phase 1, The Kent Institute of Medicine and Surgery (KIMS), is a new hospital due to open in Spring 2014 (currently on time and on budget), which will provide top level tertiary care to private and NHS patients.

KIMS comprises a series of buildings that will house complex surgical care, day treatment, outpatient consultations and diagnostic imaging for a variety of clinical specialties. These will include a Specialist Paediatrics Unit and a Specialist Women’s Health Unit, including a new maternity birthing facility for Maidstone, and pathology laboratories providing a central facility for use by Kent hospitals.

Maidstone Medical Campusasb’s property services team will be working in close collaboration with KIMS' Healthcare team and their executives, with Maidstone planning consultants DHA Planning and developers Vinci Construction, to deliver the second phase of construction, the Maidstone Medical Campus which, subject to planning consents, will provide additional care, medical, research and educational facilities.

It is hoped that the first Campus facilities will be opened in 2015/16 by KIMS Healthcare operating as Kent Institute of Neuroscience and Rehabilitation and will include:

  • a Neurological Rehabilitation Centre, providing specialist rehabilitation services and accommodation for those with medium and long-term needs, such as those with Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia and traumatic brain injuries
  • a Medical University providing Graduate and Post Graduate teaching facilities in conjunction with leading Universities;
  • Research and development facilities to be provided in partnership with Canterbury Christchurch University and Stem Laboratories UK in association with KIMS.

asb law will provide legal guidance relating to all aspects of the development including construction, property acquisitions and planning.

Russell Bell, asb law’s senior partner said, “The development of KIMS and the new Medical Campus are major projects for Kent and a substantial investment in the area. This will no doubt attract a number of supporting businesses thus generating additional growth for central Kent, in addition to bringing world class medical facilities to the region.

We’re delighted to have been appointed to support the project and look forward to working with Franz Dickmann and his team to bring it to fruition.”

Franz Dickmann, President of the Kent Institute of Medicine and Surgery (KIMS), said “We are delighted to be working with asb law and their management who are committed to helping us make the new Medical Campus/University a success, benefitting our community in Kent and beyond.  We are particularly grateful to all the clinicians who have guided us ensuring jointly that we will serve our community by providing the very best medicine has to offer”.
